Research in the Gugger Lab focuses on the central questions of how populations of long-lived trees respond evolutionarily to environmental variation and what are the implications for conservation under global change. Specific areas of interest include the genetic and epigenetic basis of local adaptation, the factors influencing divergence among populations and closely related species, and the role of hybridization in adaptation and speciation. We integrate approaches from population genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, phylogeography, paleoecology, and climate niche modeling, typically in non-model tree species of ecological and economic importance. We also work on a variety of collaborative projects on bat conservation genetics, microbial ecology, and other topics.
