AL Director and President of the American Geophysical Union, Eric Davidson, is joined by Marcia McNutt, the President of the National Academy of Sciences, to recount the historical journey from scientific skepticism 40-50 years ago to today’s broad scientific consensus about human-induced climate change. They demonstrate the value of peer review in gradually building a large body of evidence that supports this consensus, and they ask whether a recently proposed “red team/blue team” approach to debating the topic would add anything new or would meet the standards of transparency and integrity codified in the current scientific peer review process.
